Door replacement and entry door installation in St. Louis

Entry door installation St. Louis homeowners can rely on comes down to the opening, not just the door. A new door hung in a frame that's out of square, or on a sill that's soft, will stick and leak like the old one. So every door replacement starts with checking the frame, sill and threshold, and the door is sized and ordered to fit that opening. Because our St. Louis roofing team also handles siding and windows, we flash the head of the door so water runs out over the trim, not into the wall.

How it works

  1. Free consultationWe measure the opening, check the frame and sill, and go over door styles with you.
  2. Written estimateThe door, hardware, trim and labor in writing before anything is ordered.
  3. Install, then cleanupOld door out, new door fitted, sealed and adjusted, and the site cleaned up.

Entry, patio and storm doors we install

  • Entry doors in fiberglass, steel and wood, with or without sidelights and glass.
  • Patio doors: sliding and hinged doors to the deck or yard.
  • French doors, double doors for patios and wide openings.
  • Storm doors for ventilation and an extra layer in front of the entry door.
  • Garage entry doors between the garage and the house.
  • Hardware: deadbolts, handle sets, smart locks and keypad entry.

Fiberglass resists dents and can be stained to look like wood; steel is strong and costs less; wood looks best and needs the most care.

Prehung door or slab: what a replacement includes

A prehung door replaces the door, frame, hinges and sill as one unit; a slab replaces only the door panel. Prehung is the right call when the frame or sill is rotted, the door doesn't seal, or you're changing size or swing. A slab works only when the old frame is square and sound, and it has to be drilled and mortised to match the old hinges and lock.

  • Soft sill or rotted jamb bottom: prehung
  • Daylight around a closed door: prehung, with new weatherstripping
  • Frame sound, door cracked or dated: slab can work
  • Adding sidelights or a wider door: prehung and framing changes

Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint on the old trim. If replacing the door disturbs more than 20 sq ft of painted exterior surface, or 6 sq ft inside a room, the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requires a certified firm and lead-safe work practices.

What is the average cost to replace or install an entry door?

The average cost to replace an entry door depends on three things: the door itself, whether it's prehung or a slab, and how much of the frame and trim has to be rebuilt. A steel door in a sound opening costs far less than a fiberglass door with sidelights and new framing. We price each door replacement after measuring, and the estimate lists the door, hardware and labor separately so you can compare.

  • Door material and glass
  • Prehung unit or slab only
  • Rot repair at the sill, jamb or subfloor
  • Sidelights, transoms or a size change
  • Hardware and smart locks
  • Interior and exterior trim and paint

Big-box installation vs a local contractor

Big-box stores sell door installation as a package: you buy the door from them and their installer puts it in. Home Depot's own door installation page (checked October 21, 2026) describes an in-home measure with a non-refundable deposit applied to the installation, extra charges for damage found at the opening, and an average of 4 to 10 weeks from purchase to completion. Lowe's door installation page (same date) says its installs are done by independent installers and carry a one-year labor warranty. Neither store publishes a fixed installation price; both quote after measuring. The useful comparison is what each quote covers:

Question to askWhy it matters
Is rot repair at the sill and jamb included? It's the most common add-on charge
Who does the work, and who do I call if it leaks? The seller and installer may be different companies
Is the door priced separately from the labor?Lets you compare quotes line by line
Are trim, paint and hardware included?Often quoted as extras

Storm doors and your entry door warranty

Read the entry door's warranty before adding a storm door. A storm door in full sun can trap heat against the entry door, and several door manufacturers' published warranties limit or void coverage when a storm door is added, or when the door faces direct sun without an overhang. A south- or west-facing front door is where this matters most. We check the warranty terms for the door you choose before installing a storm door over it.

Choosing a front door color and finish

Pick a front door color that works with the roof, trim and siding, since the door is the one place a bold color is easy to change later. Fiberglass can be stained or painted; steel is painted. Dark colors absorb more heat, so a dark door in full sun is another reason to check the manufacturer's finish guidance. If you're redoing the outside, plan the door with siding replacement and replacement windows so the trim and colors match.

How to choose a door replacement contractor in St. Louis

  1. They measure and check the frame before ordering anything.
  2. They flash the opening, so water at the head of the door goes out, not in.
  3. The door, labor and extras are in writing.

We do all three. A door damaged in a storm can also be part of a hail damage repair claim, and a leak above the door sometimes traces back to overflowing gutters.

Door replacement FAQs

Is Home Depot or Lowe's better for doors?

Both sell a wide range of doors. The better choice depends on the installation: who does it, what the quote leaves out, and who stands behind the labor. Get one big-box quote and one local quote and compare them line by line.

How much will Home Depot or Lowe's charge to install a door?

Neither publishes a set price. Both quote after an in-home measure, and the price depends on the door and the condition of the opening.

How long does a door replacement take?

Once the door arrives, a standard prehung entry door is usually one visit. Framing changes or sidelights take longer.

Can you replace just the door and keep the frame?

Yes, if the frame is square and sound. That's a slab replacement, and it's checked at the consultation.
