Metal roofing in St. Louis

The metal roofing we install is ribbed steel: long panels with raised ribs, screwed through the face into the deck or purlins with sealed screws. It's the metal roof you see on St. Louis garages, pole barns, shops and some homes, because it's fast to install, sheds snow and rain, and costs less than other metal systems. As a local St. Louis roofing company, we also add snow guards to metal roofs that were installed without them, and bend metal trim to fit the building.

How it works

  1. Free inspectionWe look at the whole roof, take photos and show you what we found. No charge and no obligation.
  2. Written estimateYou get the price and scope in writing before any work starts, with repair and replacement options when both make sense.
  3. The work, then cleanupOur crew does the job, cleans up the site and walks it with you. On storm jobs we work with your insurance adjuster.

Ribbed steel, standing seam or stone-coated steel?

All three are steel roofs. They differ in how the panels are fastened, which decides price and upkeep.

TypeHow it's fastenedUpkeep
Ribbed (exposed-fastener) panelsScrews with rubber washers through the panel faceScrews checked and replaced over time
Standing seamHidden clips under raised seamsFew exposed fasteners to maintain
Stone-coated steelShingle- or shake-shaped steel with a stone-chip coatingLooks like a shingle roof

Ribbed steel is the one we install. If you have your heart set on standing seam, ask us about it at the inspection.

Snow guards for a metal roof

Snow guards on a metal roof are small brackets or bars fastened in rows near the eave. They hold snow on the roof so it melts or drops off in small amounts, instead of sliding off the slick metal in one heavy sheet. A metal roof without snow guards can dump that sheet onto a doorway, a car, a gutter or a person. We retrofit snow guards. Metal roof owners who skipped them at install can add them any time.

Where snow guards go on a metal roof

  • Above doors, steps and walkways
  • Over lower roofs, porches and decks the snow would hit
  • Above gutters, which a sliding sheet of snow can tear off
  • Over gas meters, AC units and parked cars

Guards over one door only can make the rest of the roof shed unpredictably, so on most roofs they run along the whole eave over anywhere people walk. The number of rows depends on the roof's pitch and how long the panels run from ridge to eave. On ribbed panels the guards are screwed through the panel with sealed fasteners; on standing seam they can clamp to the seams without holes.

How much does a metal roof cost in Missouri?

A metal roof in Missouri costs more upfront than an asphalt shingle roof. The price depends on the panel type, the steel's gauge and finish, the roof size in squares (one square is 100 square feet), the pitch and the trim. Ribbed steel is the least expensive metal system, and a tear-off or deck repair adds to it. Your written estimate lists each line.

How much should a 2,000 sq ft metal roof cost?

Start by checking that 2,000 sq ft is the roof, not the house. A 2,000 sq ft one-story house at a 6/12 pitch has about 22 squares of roof; the same floor area on two stories has about 11. Our page on what a new roof costs in St. Louis shows the pitch factors and how to compare estimates by price per square.

Is a metal roof cheaper than shingles?

Not upfront; a shingle roof usually costs less to install. On garages and pole barns, ribbed steel is often the simplest roof to put on and keep up.

What is the biggest problem with metal roofs?

On ribbed steel roofs, the biggest problem is the screws. Every screw has a rubber washer that seals the hole, and the sun dries that washer out until it cracks. The panels also grow and shrink with each hot day and cold night, which can slowly work screws loose and widen their holes. Screws driven too tight at install crush the washer from day one. The fix is new, larger-diameter sealed screws, not a smear of caulk.

  • Check the screws: once a year and after big storms, the same schedule as a free roof inspection.
  • Watch the laps and trim: sealant at panel overlaps and flashing ages too.
  • Look for rust at cut edges and where other metals touch the panels.

A small leak on a metal roof is usually one of these, and fixing it is like repairing roof leaks on any roof: find the spot, fix the spot.

Does a metal roof need underlayment?

Yes, on a house. The International Residential Code's metal roof panel section (R905.10.5) requires underlayment that meets its general underlayment rules (R905.1.1), and the panel maker's instructions set the type. Open-framed pole barns and some garages are built differently, with panels on purlins and no deck, so what they need depends on the building.

Can a metal roof go over shingles?

Sometimes, but not over two existing layers or a water-soaked or deteriorated roof, under IRC Section R908.3.1.1. The code exempts complete, separate systems that carry the roof load straight to the framing, such as panels on new purlins. Panel makers' product approvals can add their own limits, such as one existing layer only and longer screws. Because a layover hides the deck, we check it first; if it's soft, the old roof comes off and the job becomes a full tear-off and new roof.

Metal roofs, hail and insurance

A metal roof may come through a hailstorm without a leak and still be covered in dents. Whether insurance pays for those dents depends on one clause. Many policies on metal roofs carry a cosmetic damage exclusion, and the wording matters:

  • "Doesn't let water through": some exclusions call damage cosmetic if it changes how the roof looks but doesn't let water in. Dents without a leak are excluded.
  • "Still works as a barrier": others call damage cosmetic only if the roof still keeps out the elements as well as it did before. In 2026 the Eighth Circuit, the federal appeals court that covers Missouri, read one insurer's exclusion of this kind as not requiring a leak (Cannon Falls Area Schools v. Hanover).

Read your policy's roof section before a storm. If hail does hit, our guide to filing a hail claim in Missouri walks through the claim.

Metal roofing for garages, pole barns and commercial buildings

Much of the metal roofing we do goes on outbuildings and commercial buildings: detached garages, pole barns, shops and brick buildings with garage bays. We fabricate the trim these jobs need, from garage door trim to scupper boxes that drain commercial flat-roof work. Snow guards and new seamless gutter installation often go on with the roof.

Metal roofing FAQs

What is the average price for a 3 ft by 10 ft metal roof?

A 3 ft by 10 ft roof is 30 square feet, under a third of a roofing square, so it isn't priced per square. Small metal roofs over a porch, a shed or a bay are priced by the job: panels, trim, screws and the time to set up. Put the measurements in the form, or text a photo, and we'll tell you what it involves.
